If we surrendered to earth’s intelligence we could rise up rooted, like trees.

Direct Experience: Deep Discovery
Cultivating a presence of mind infused with awe and wonder at the brilliance of nature is the most desired state of being in this work; attention to self, others, and the environment is heightened. Realistically, clients will begin therapy with many things on their mind and with different degrees of receptivity to nature (ecological identity). As Joseph Cornell highlighted, including the stages of awakening enthusiasm and focusing the senses can help shift a person into a receptive state where they can absorb their experiences with nature in a deeper and more impactful way. The psychological, physical, social, and spiritual benefits of direct contact with nature have been detailed above and in numerous other texts. Thus, the focus here will be on how practitioners can partner with nature to enrich the direct experience of children and youth toward therapeutic aims. Specifically, we will explore inquisitive wandering, creating a culture of awareness and appreciation for stillness, engaging with the elements, and the metaphorical possibilities of nature.
